geeking out

It's confession time, my dear friends. And I do hope we can still be friends after what I'm about to tell you. You're sure to look at me differently. Here goes... I'm a total nerd. I mean, really, a full blown geek. Let me lay it all out for ya (in no particular order) and do or don't laugh, because it's all true...
  1. I have glasses. And I like them.
  2. I grew up playing with my brother's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as much as I played with dolls. I also read comic books and Goosebumps more frequently than I read Anne of Green Gables, etc.
  3. I used to read about and sketch fairies with elaborate wings, obsessively.
  4. Most of the guys I dated or hung out with were either huge video gamers or computer programmers. My husband happens to be both.
  5. I once considered getting a minor in Computer Science in college. I took one course (CS 124), was one of two girls in attendance, did surprisingly well and ended up with an A in the class and was offered a tutoring position. My own tutor and teacher practically begged me to stay in the program...
  6. I used to be able to read binary, assembly language, and basic C++
  7. I currently understand a bit of html and can code my own stuff, with a little help from the web et al.
  8. I frequently read and can appreciate/understand 90% of the webcomic xkcd
  9. I have a kick trash, screaming fast computer that is not only useful for all of my graphic design projects, but also comes in real handy whenever I feel like playing this game. My character's name is Rhea and I'm a wood elf. But I only play in God Mode...
  10. I really, truly want to play Dungeons & Dragons. The real-live version, not the video game (which I have played).
  11. I admittedly feel more comfortable scrapbooking digitally rather than with paper
  12. I love the Renaissance Festival and have been dying to go back ever since my first field trip there, despite the Arizona heat, that's how much I love it. However, I did go to a jousting tournament In Bellevue, last summer. That was fun.
  13. Firefly is one of my favorite shows. I wish it would come back.
  14. I'm still freaking out (happily) that the geniuses behind BSG finally decided to kill off Cally. She was fracking annoying! ;)
  15. I've always secretly wanted to go to this, and I am seriously considering going this year. You know, in an effort to fully embrace my nerdhood.
  16. Galaxy Quest is by far, one of my most favorite movies. Ever.
  17. Lord of the Rings is my favorite book. Dracula is my second. I'm a sucker for anything magika and/or vampire, pun not intended.
  18. Speaking of which, I cannot even begin to tell you how many times I've read the Twilight series. It's not THE best book ever (please see #17), but it is a fun and easy read (please, don't think less of me dearest Rob). But honestly, vampires and teenage romance? I was doomed from the beginning. It seems as though Stephenie Meyer manufactures my brand of heroin ;) I also secretly subscribe to and frequently stalk any fansites out there... and DUDE! They're making a movie!!! Seriously geeking out over this, this, and this. Oh yeah, AND this:

I've already got plans in the making for a book signing expedition AND a tour of Forks, La Push, etc. Who's with me???

BUT, I do speak plain English (sans Middle Earth accent) and can dress myself (in clothing other than mithril armor). Also, I have not and never will work at McDonald's. So, can we still be friends? *B

  1. I hear ya on the firefly and BSG stuff. I'm a total brown coat myself and I think that Roslin's the 12th (why else would Cylon blood help her cancer?).

  2. I just want to know what happens with the now two half-Cylon babies... and when does Heroes return?! *B

  3. Wow, these interests must run in the family. Kory has so much in common with you, and he also claims to be a geek at heart! :) It's ok, geeks are needed every bit as much as awkward nerdy folks like myself.

  4. Those were hilarious.
I happen to be a sort of closet computer geek myself. Well, actually I don't think I even qualify as a full-fledged computer geek. I am more like a wannabe computer geek. Wow, that's pretty sad - a wannabe geek - does it get any lower than that?

  5. I am so glad that my sister's such a nerdy geek fantasy fanatic. It almost brings a tear to my eye. Beth, you're not just a great sister, you're a level 20 wood elf paladin in my book any day.

  6. i'm not nearly as much of a nerd as you are (ha ha) but the is a thing or two on that list that i can relate too, and i'm sure i have a zillion other nerdy qualities. i guess we can still be friends.

  7. lol! Well, I better still want to be your friend, because:

    1) I used to have glasses too, though I did the reverse path and actually lessen my prescription over the years lol (I had a weak muscle that got all better in 8th grade)

    2) Oh, I had Barbies. But my cousins cars and car mat and wrestler dolls were also very tempting. And TMNT was my FAVOURITE show - I remember once we were leaving for the doctor and I remembered that it was to be on TV that morning and I proceeded to throw a tamtrum because I'd miss it - which promped my mom to get out of the car and shove the first tape in the VHS she could find. Turns out it was a tape of our family vacation in Disney Land (oops...)

    4) My husband is probably the first one that isn't like that :P

    5) I also studied Computer Sciences! And yes, sadly, we ladies are under-represented lol I also did very well, but then decided I liked the designing of the software part better than the programming part, and ended up in visual arts :)

    6) Diddo, and VisualBasic

    7) I make my own webpages, as well as my mom's for her travel agency!

    9) I used to play alot of online game, but kind of set back lately. I used to love Conquer Online - basic, but free :P

    10) Too bad your across the country, I would also love that!

    11) I hear ya - my Visual Arts degree was called Visual and MEDIA Arts for a reason - Photoshop, 3DStudio Max, Adobe Premiere... the digital way to photograph, edit, animated, and make movies hehe

    17) I LOOOOOVE fantasy books too - LOTR is definitely a good one, as well as Narnia :)

    18) I've heard about that book, and it's in my To Read list :P

Do YOU still want to be my friend? ^_^

  9. It all only ups your cool-o-meter in my mind.

  10. Well, I'm sure the geeks of the world welcome you with open arms.

(from someone who is not a geek) <3

  11. Any way you look at it, geek or nerd, I still think you're the best of everything that is wonderful in the world!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Well... I agree with some of the things that you said. I too love the renissance fair.. we have one every year here in Vegas too... I own all of the Lord of the Ring movies... but I am mostly just obsessed with TWILIGHT. Thanks for sharing the trailer. I am going to have to post it on my blog as well.. It was awesome. I don't know how I am going to make it until December. that seems way to far away....

    ReplyDelete
  13. wow. I don't even know what to say. i mean, dungeons and dragons...really? i can, however, relate to special feelings about lord of the rings. one of my dream vacations is to visit the shire or the place where the elves live (dangit, i forgot the name, but i'm certain you know it). thank you for sharing your geekiness with the world. now i know why your blog is stinkin' awesome. you know how to speak the truest form of blog language.

  14. All that and I STILL think you're top notch! :) Thanks for being geeky and AWESOME all in one!

  15. I must not be a geek at all. I think I only understood about 25% of that entire post. The rest of the time I was completley lost. But I didn't really think you sounded like a geek... I was more impressed thinking, wow, she knows all that stuff. That's super cool. Oh, and I really need to read the Twilight series... Such a fun post, Beth!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Haha, can I just say that I totally love you, geeky-ness and all! I must say that I loved the goosebumps series as well and I loved loved loved the twilight books too. Secretly, so did my hubby, we read them together after I had finished and he totally made fun of me for liking them so much...that was until he realized the pull of the vampire ;) Thanks for sharing...you are to coolest...and I agree, what happened to Heroes?!

  18. Buffy,
I have resurfaced. I went straight for your blog as soon as I finished composing my brief new spot. You are a ray of sunshine my dear. P.S. I knew you before you had grown into your geekiness. Love you so much, Becah

  19. Shizzle my nizzle! You crack me up!

  20. This retty much proves you to be the COOLEST girl in town! :) ~Jessica

  21. Cedric Diggory is in Twilight?! We are totally still friends. Probably more so now :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. I admit that I'm really looking forward to the Twilight movie, mostly because then I can satisfy my curiosity and see what the fuss is about, without investing the time into reading it (yet).
You're funny. I always thought we had so much in common, but as time goes on, I see we don't really. But that's okay, I still consider myself some kind of geek, just not that kind. I'm probably more of a nerd than a geek.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Thank you, Beth, for getting me hooked on teen/vampire love! I have read the whole "Twilight Series" at least four or five times since I became an addict last summer! Please let me come with you because I have no one who would go with me! I am going to have to go to the movie all alone! I can't even get anyone else to read the books and my whole family thinks I am insane.

    ReplyDelete
  24. You are hilarious. This just cracks me up AND I don't think you are a nerd.

I don't know Beth, I am totally with you on Firefly (may the executives that cancelled it die horrible fiery deaths) but until you can ps aux | grep java and selectively kill -9 your catalina process because you tried a kill -15 and it didn't work you are probably safe from the uber geek echelon. ;)

Seriously though, it's always nice to find out a cousin of mine shares in the joy of properly formatted XHTML 1.0 strict compliant code. Next family reunion we'll have to talk lvl 70 horde mages (no pallys please, that class needs a nerf in a bad way) in WoW and the upcoming release of HTML 5.0, CSS 3, and WebKit. Huzzah for the geeks!

  26. Ok. Confession...one that still to this day rarely anyone knows. In high school I was the head cheerleader who dated the star football star (yes, my cliche past is an embarrassment.) During this time though I hid the fact from "my group" that I was a closet trekky! I had read a majority of the Star trek books and even attended a few conventions in secret. Yes, that includes waiting in line for hours so that Commander Worf could sign my photo. There it is...I promise to still be your friend if you be mine. One day I ll have my mom dig out my Klingon dictionary from the attic as proof.

  27. Wow, you really are a geek!! In a good way though. Way to put it all out there!

I've had it on my list to get back to you for FOREVER, but just so you know, I don't hand quilt anything! All of it is machine quilted or stippled. There is a tutorial on my website if you want to see what its all about. Also, how you design fabric is a LONG story for another day. Hopefully one that is in the near future!

  28. wow! I am awe of your geekness!!! :)

I have been so ridiculed for my addiction to the pg rated vampire teenage romance novels. I blame my sisters for this since they held my head underwater and forced me to read every Barbara Cartland novel in print when I was between 12 and 14. Did I mention that it is also my sisters who ridicule me?

  30. hahaha...I still love you.
hopefully you'll still be my friend after I say this:

too bad they've made Edward seem like a creep instead of the stud he was supposed to be...maybe he was a bit of a creep in the book and I just blocked it out...can't really block that out watching the previews. Kirsten Stewart is a perfect choice, however. and the preview makes me want to see it...after reading the book I wasn't all that thrilled to see a movie of it or read the rest. kinda dumb story line, but it may still prove to be entertaining...sorry, I'm not that much into teen romances.uch. and I've only read the first book. so my "dumb story line" doesn't encompass the whole work. and after watching the movie I just might eat my words about not having a desire to read the rest of them. who knows.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Okay so your a geek. Unfortunely I'm not as geekie. My list is narrowed to I have glasses and I've read the Twilight books. :) I took a class in computers, because I had to, and I married a geek.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Still friends! I really like Galaxy Quest too--so funny. Much like this post. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Basically, being a geek runs in our family. That movie looks so good. We should go see it when it comes out.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I love you despite your nerdhood. Maybe that's precisely what I love about you. Anywho...I am giddy after watching the teaser. I think I need to re-read, but I have to make a conscious decision because it means nothing will get any attention until I am done. sigh.

On another note, Zack was trying to bite me the other day (during a classic fit) so I leaned my head back to avoid him & he went for my neck. My first thought? Edward Cullen. I was laughing out loud.

    ReplyDelete
  35. he he I am excited for that movie to come out!fcaos

    ReplyDelete
  36. Galaxy Quest!?! I'm still thinking about the friends part, oh Beth I love you!

    ReplyDelete
  37. That was great. Thanks Beth. I think we're geeky in our own little ways. I'm amazed by all you understand and know how to do. Sometimes I feel I just pretend my way through life.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm pretty sure my love just grew 10 times for you. THAT was awesome. I'm with you on so many points, especially Firefly - and why is it not back on air yet???

    ReplyDelete
  39. You already know I'd be with you in Forks if I could! I'll be there in Sept!!! WHOA!
Okay, the Host signing was AWESOME! Stephenie is beyond awesome, amazing and whatever else you want to say!! She rocks!! Check out our night of Stephenie here:

I've been to Comic-con twice. It's fun, crowded, and full of sweaty nerdy dudes. Also, I totally remember those faeries. They were so good!

You're currently in the process of making my day. So thanks for that! *B
